KOREAN WAR
Home Page: Prior to the Korean War, the Soviet Union and the United States were involved in a Cold War involving threats between the two powers. However, this all changed on June 24, 1950, when approximately 75,000 North Korean soldiers crossed the US border between the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea to the North and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the South. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Koreas behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism. After going back and forth without any progress, the fighting slowly stalled and American officials were anxious to create some sort of truce with the North Koreans. The Americans feared that there could be a wider war involving both Russia and China, possibly even leading to World War III. Finally, the Korean War came to an end in July 1953 with the 38th parallel still serving as the dividing zone between North and South Korea. In all, about 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. Sadly, the country remains divided today.</span>Home Page: Prior to the Korean War, the Soviet Union and the United States were involved in a Cold War involving threats between the two powers.
