Battles: On June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea and the South Korean Army fled, as the UN came to help ut. The US provided most of the UN forces for the help. Soon, the South Korean government occupied only a small part of Korea on the southern tip. Then the war started, and at first, the UN was only trying to defend South Korea, but after the first summer of fighting, President Truman wanted to go on the offensive. He didn't want the war to be about liberating North Korea from communism. Since MacArthur pushed the North Koreans back up to the northern border, the Chinese became unhappy and sent their army into the war. At that point, President Truman replaced MacArthur with General Matthew Ridgway. Ridgway fortified the border just north of the 38th Parallel. The two sides would then battle for the rest of the war. The UN army would retaliate against North Korea's further attacks. The end of the war was near, negotiations continued, and President Truman did not want to appear weak. On July 17, 1953 a treaty was finally signed that ended the war. Both countries would still remain independent and the border would stay as the 38th Parallel. Overall, few things had changed as a result of the war.
