Korean War
War before US Involvement: The Soviets wanted to expand their sphere of communist influence into Korea. The United States countered by encouraging the establishment of democracy. Additionally, the United States stressed the importance of containment, which is a foreign policy used to prevent the spread of communism. The US stepped in to the conflict in Korea to save face and to appear strong against communism, but not because Korea was vital to American interests. The North Koreans invaded South Korea on June 24, 1950. Truman then ordered U.S. troops to the aid of South Korea and convinced the United Nations (UN) to send military aid as well, in what was referred to as "police action.” Due to the surprise attack by the North Koreans, by September, the U.S. and South Korean forces found themselves pushed into the far southern corner of the Korean peninsula. President Truman decided to go on the offensive to free North Korea of communism. (got them back to the 38th parallel) General Douglas MacArthur’s troops had driven the enemy deep into North Korea and was determined to push them into China. The Chinese army forced the UN troops back into South Korea and poured troops into the fight. The UN forces had then forced the Chinese back behind the 38th parallel, where the war had started in the first place.
